OurExecutive Summary

The Congolese Urban Refugee Community (CURC) was established in Kampala, Uganda, by Congolese refugees united by a shared vision to strengthen community resilience, representation, and access to essential services. Since the early 2000s, increasing numbers of Congolese citizens fleeing conflict, persecution, and instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo sought safety in Uganda’s urban areas—particularly Kampala—desiring opportunities for education, work, and self-reliance beyond refugee settlements.

Recognizing the growing urban refugee population and the challenges they faced in navigating life in the city, Congolese leaders formed CURC as a community-based organization dedicated to improving the socio-economic welfare of its members. The initiative emerged from grassroots mobilization to address gaps in protection, advocacy, and inclusion that urban refugees often experience.
